VALPROATE ACID

INDICATIONS

All forms of epilepsy

CONS INDICATION

Active liver disease, history of severe liver disease in the family, pancreatitis, porphyria.
Attention: liver disorders (monitor liver function before and during the first 6 months of therapy), particularly in patients who at high risk: children <3 years, patients with metabolic disorders, degenerative disorders, brain disorders or severe seizures associated with mental retardation or multiple antiepileptic therapy . Also in patients with renal impairment, pregnancy, lactation, and SLE. Avoid breaking abruptly drug.

DOSE

Adults and children> 12 years of the initial dose of 600 mg daily in 2 divided doses, preferably after meals. Raise the dose of 200 mg a day after an interval of 3 days, maximum 2.5 g daily in divided doses. Maintenance dose 1-2 g daily (20-30 mg / kg daily).
Children> 20 kg initial dose of 20 mg / kg daily in divided doses.
Children <12 years, weight> 20 kg initial dose of 400 mg daily in divided doses, up to a range of 20-30 mg / kg per day, maximum 35 mg / kg daily.

SIDE EFFECTS

Gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, appetite and weight increased, tremor, hair loss, swelling, thrombocytopenia, platelet clumping resistance, impaired liver function and (rarely) fatal liver failure.
Immediately discontinue treatment if symptoms encountered limp, swelling, abdominal pain, vomiting, anorexia, jaundice, severe drowsiness, and lost control of seizures.

SPECIMENS:

Oral Liquid 200 mg / 5 ml, 100 mg tablets, enteric-coated tablet 200 mg and 500 mg.
